Maya Angelou, Letter to My Daughter

inspirationsale“On a recent wilderness hike I found myself quite lost, cold and sensing a growing panic in my gut.

I sat to collect my wits and it was then that I noticed this remarkable tree. It had somehow grown through an immovable boulder in an effort to claim its own place, its own life.

I found it an inspiring reminder about how we respond to seemingly insurmountable obstacles. And this photograph and print is the result. – Douglas

“I was once told that certain spiritual masters in Tibet used to set their teacups upside down before they went to bed each night as a reminder that all life was impermanent.

And then, when they awoke each morning, they turned their teacups right side up again with the happy thought, ‘I’m still here!‘ This simple gesture was a wonderful reminder to celebrate every moment of the day.”

“I do believe in simplicity. It is astonishing as well as sad, how many trivial affairs even the wisest thinks he must attend to in a day… So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real. Probe the earth to see where your main roots run. ”

― Henry David Thoreau

“Will it be here that we shall find a place
which will not elude us, or which if it remains
does not exert on us a culpable attraction?

Or must we, leaning over the deck and
watching the shores glide by,
move forever onward?”

― André Gide, Urien’s Voyage

“What is the meaning of life? That was all- a simple question; one that tended to close in on one with years, the great revelation had never come. The great revelation perhaps never did come. Instead, there were little daily miracles, illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark; here was one.”

― Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse
